Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
