A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
