Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
