RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
